Saturday evening brought the tragic news that Rainford Kalaba had lost his life. However, it turned out to be incorrect.
It was quite a shock that hit parts of the football world when Zambian media reported on Saturday evening that 37-year-old footballer Rainford Kalaba had lost his life in a traffic accident.
But just a few hours later, another shock came.
Rainford Kalaba’s club, TP Mazembe, had to correct its initial announcement. The footballer was not dead after all, but was instead in a medically induced coma.
“Clarification: Kalaba was declared dead, but we have just learned from the medical team that he has now been placed in a medically induced coma,” TP Mazembe wrote on the social media platform X.
However, no further updates about the Zambian’s condition have been reported.
Rainford Kalaba has played 103 international matches for Zambia and scored 15 goals.
He has played for European clubs such as Braga, Gil Vicente, and Leiria in Portugal, but it is in his home country that he has made the most significant impact.
He has played 280 matches for TP Mazembe, where he has scored 78 goals.
