The 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps, the third round of the FIA World Endurance Championship, was overshadowed by a severe crash on Saturday afternoon. Earl Bamber and Sean Gelael, the drivers involved, are okay.
After the turn towards Raidillon, New Zealander Earl Bamber (Cadillac) attempted to overtake Sean Gelael’s BMW on the straight stretch towards Les Combes from Kemmel, but the two drivers made rough contact.
Bamber and Gelael crashed into the barriers at high speed, completely damaging their cars. However, both drivers were unharmed.
With an hour and 47 minutes remaining, race officials decided to wave the red flag to remove the two wrecks from the track, clean up the debris, and repair the damaged barriers.
At that time, the Ferrari driven by Pier Guidi, James Calado, and Antonio Giovinazzi was leading, followed by the Ferrari of Nicklas Nielsen, Antonio Fuoco, and Miguel Molina.
The Porsche of Julien Andlauer and Neel Jani completed the top three. Dries Vanthoor (BMW) was in eighth place, while Laurens Vanthoor (Porsche) was eleventh, despite an extra pit stop.
