When Tadej Pogacar lined up for Monday’s stage at Giro d’Italia, his attire caused such a stir that he was threatened with disqualification.
When Tadej Pogacar debuted in the Giro’s Maglia Rosa during the third stage, his choice of shorts did not comply with UCI regulations.
According to Cyclingnews, Pogacar was threatened with disqualification after he started the third stage in the leader’s jersey, the Maglia Rosa, but wore purple shorts that matched the color of the race’s points jersey.
As a result, UCI commissioners criticized the Slovenian, who had received his attire from the race organizer RCS and the clothing manufacturer Castelli.
In today’s stage, Pogacar did not wear the same controversial “uniform,” as he sported only the Maglia Rosa and his UAE team’s black shorts.
The purple shorts Pogacar wore were to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Turin football team’s plane crash, which claimed 31 lives. However, the clothing combination was not cleared with the UCI, which forwarded the matter to President David Lappartient.
