Harsh Treatment: Jose Mourinho Forced the Superstar to Train With U16 Team

The star says that Jose Mourinho kicked him off the team and forced him to train alone when they were both at Manchester United.

Bastian Schweinsteiger’s time at Manchester United didn’t turn out quite as some of the parties might have hoped. The German arrived in 2015, but by 2017 he had left the club again. This was due to José Mourinho, who was never interested in using the German player.

This is what Schweinsteiger himself said on the podcast “Overlap,” which is hosted by former Manchester United star Gary Neville.

“It was 2016, and I had been with the German national team. We went far in the Euros, reaching the semifinals. So I came back a bit later, and the team had already been to the USA for a training camp,” he said.

“I arrived and trained with Zlatan Ibrahimovic on the first day, which I thought was cool. The next day, which was my birthday, I went to Carrington, and there was John Murtough, and he said I wasn’t allowed to go into the locker room. The coach had said so.”

“I hadn’t received any warning or anything. Someone could have told me (on the first day) or explained it in a normal way, but I had to go to the youth teams’ locker room and train with the U16s.”

The German midfielder then explains that later that day, he had a meeting with Jose Mourinho, who did not think Schweinsteiger seemed happy at United because when he had been injured, he had rehabilitated in Germany.

According to him, this was an arrangement he had made with the former coach, Louis van Gaal. Nonetheless, it quickly became clear that it was only a matter of time before Schweinsteiger would leave the club.

“After that, I trained alone for at least three months. I trained before and after the first team,” he said.

The German ended up playing 134 minutes for United that season, before moving to MLS in March, where he also ended his career.
