National coach Julian Nagelsmann made some intriguing statements in the mixed zone at the meeting of European Championship coaches in Düsseldorf, including about his former club FC Bayern.
According to Bild, Nagelsmann said the following on the Bayern crisis: “There are players who are happy to come to us when things are not going well at the club. That could be the case with FC Bayern right now.”
The national coach continued: “There are also players who bring momentum from their club. I generally do not evaluate the clubs’ sporting situation but that of the individual players. Of course, one affects the other, as seen with VfB.”
However, Bayern players also play a special role for Nagelsmann during crisis times. The DFB coach said: “The Bayern players are all very experienced, can separate well when things are not going well at the club. Nevertheless, they have a quality that will help us in the national team.”
Nagelsmann also spoke about sports director Rudi Völler, who just extended his contract until 2026: “Rudi Völler is an emblem of German football, celebrated enthusiastically everywhere he appears. He has earned it. He was a player with great successes, now an official with great successes. He is a person who has remained totally normal, approachable, and very warm. For German football, it is a very important step that he has extended his contract and continues to be the sports director. I can only congratulate the DFB and him. He enjoys it. It is a good signal to everyone.”
Nagelsmann on the Völler effects on his future: “The situation is as I have already said very transparently. There is nothing new to report. Rudi had to make his decision for himself, I don’t dictate anything to him and vice versa. Everyone can express their wish and exchange opinions, which we have done. He decided to extend, not because I wanted him to. Every person is responsible for themselves. I am happy for the DFB and German football. Everything else will be seen in the coming weeks.”
