The board of Real Madrid has no intention of offering a contract renewal to midfielder Luka Modric. Although the Croatian wants to continue, the club believes it is time to close this chapter and bet on new players.
“I want to thank everyone for the affection they show me every day. I love them too. Stay? Well, we’ll see. It’s time to celebrate with the people and my teammates. We’ll see what happens,” Modric said about his future, according to Fichajes.
During the celebration of the recently won league title, Croatian Luka Modric once again left open the possibility of staying at Real Madrid next season.
According to OK Diario, the Balkan player wishes to extend his stint at the club for another year. In fact, he would be willing to accept a significantly reduced role without complaint for the 2024-2025 season.
Real Madrid has a clear stance
The Madrid leadership, however, is not inclined to change their stance. Although they appreciate the midfielder’s sensational career, the executives at Santiago Bernabéu believe it is time to close this chapter and move on to a new era in which players like Arda Güler and Brahim Díaz must take on more responsibilities.
“Real Madrid believes that at 38 years old, the man from Zadar has done everything he had to do while wearing white. Therefore, the club will talk to him and explain their position, which is that he should no longer be a player for the club starting next season,” the publication explains.
Once he learns of what seems to be the irrevocable decision of the club, Modric will need to choose a new destination. His family wants to stay in the capital of Spain, but for that to happen, he would need to retire and accept a position as an assistant to Carlo Ancelotti.
If, as it seems, he chooses to extend his career, the man from Zadar might head to Saudi Arabia or Major League Soccer in North America, as staying in Europe does not seem viable at the moment. This is a matter to follow.
