Bayern lost 1:3 in Stuttgart. But everyone is talking about the coaching position of the German club.
Just hours before the start of the game, Bayern Munich faced another rejection from a potential coaching candidate. Following declines from Xabi Alonso, Julian Nagelsmann, Ralf Rangnick, and Roberto de Zerbi, Roger Schmidt also turned down the Bayern bosses.
On Saturday, he stated, “I am not on the market. I have a job at Benfica.”
Another rejection. Will Thomas Tuchel now remain as Bayern’s coach beyond the end of the season? On Friday, he had left the door slightly open, saying, “Anything is possible.”
Before the Stuttgart game, however, the officials made it clear: Tuchel will step down after the season. In a discussion on Viaplay Sport Polska, sporting director Christoph Freund explained that there is “no chance” of an extended collaboration.
Club President Herbert Hainer: “The agreement stands.” The only certainty at Bayern right now is that nothing is certain.
Bayern played conservatively, likely already thinking about the Champions League semi-final return leg against Real Madrid. As a result, Stuttgart controlled the game and took the lead. In the 29th minute, after a great setup by Undav, Leonidas Stergiou slips the ball past Bayern keeper Neuer. It’s the first Stuttgart goal for the defender.
Raphaël Guerreiro and Eric Dier had to leave the field due to injuries. The Munich team put in a lackluster performance – until a dubious penalty out of nowhere brought the equalizer!
In the penalty area, VfB defender Waldemar Anton slightly catches Gnabry on the neck with his arm. Referee Tobias Welz points to the spot. A tough call, confirmed by VAR.
Bayern striker Harry Kane converts the penalty to make it 1:1. His 36th league goal. The Englishman needs five more goals in two games to match Robert Lewandowski’s season record of 41 goals.
Bayern couldn’t hold the draw. With goals from Jeong (83rd) and Silas (90th+3), VfB secured their first home victory against Bayern since 2007. Stuttgart moved within two points of the Munich team, potentially snatching the runner-up title from them.
