Carlos Alcaraz remains number three in the ATP rankings, and there is a specific reason for this. The Spanish tennis star was at risk of losing his position.
The withdrawal due to injury of Russian player Daniil Medvedev from the quarterfinals of the Madrid Masters 1000 against Czech player Jiri Lehecka ensures that Spanish player Carlos Alcaraz remains at number three in the ATP ranking.
The elimination of the Murcian player, who lost in the round of 16 against Russian Andrey Rublev, had put his position on the podium in doubt.
Had Medvedev beaten Lehecka and reached the semifinals, he would have moved up to the third spot in the world rankings, pushing Alcaraz down to fourth.
Thus, following the Muscovite’s withdrawal due to a right adductor injury and his exit from the competition before the semifinals, Alcaraz remains in third place, behind world number one Novak Djokovic and Italian Jannik Sinner.
Alcaraz, who plans to compete in the Rome Masters 1000 next week, ensures he will arrive at Roland Garros holding the number three ranking.
The Spanish tennis star has not had as strong a start to the season as he did last year. He has been unable to deliver results at the same level, but that’s not all.
Alcaraz has also been hampered by injuries, which have forced him to withdraw from several tournaments. As a result, he has lost a significant number of points, which is the primary reason why Medvedev was close to overtaking him in the rankings.
