After Ralf Rangnick’s rejection, speculation around the coaching position at FC Bayern has intensified. Former player Dietmar Hamann has now recommended Zinedine Zidane to the German record champions.
“If Bayern wants to save face and come out of this situation somewhat intact, they need to get Zinedine Zidane now,” Hamann wrote in his Sky column.
That the Frenchman does not speak German “should not be a problem,” the TV expert continued.
“The question is whether he wants to do it because a candidate of this caliber could now say, ‘If you really wanted me, why didn’t you ask me a few weeks ago?'” Hamann added.
Zidane has been repeatedly mentioned as a candidate for Bayern Munich in recent weeks.
Zidane coached Real Madrid between 2016 and 2018 and again between 2019 and 2021. The Frenchman won three Champions League titles with Los Blancos during his two tenures. Zidane has been without a job since his departure, thus he is available.
At the end of April, sporting director Max Eberl cleared up rumors that the new Bayern coach must be able to speak German. “No, I didn’t say that – but he should speak English,” he said.
When asked if this applies to Zidane, Eberl explained: “I don’t know if he speaks English,” to which Sky expert Lothar Matthäus concluded: “If he [Eberl] doesn’t know, then he hasn’t spoken with him.”
With a smile to host Sebastian Hellmann, Eberl replied: “You didn’t notice, Lothar noticed.”
Hamann does not believe in a Tuchel turnaround at FC Bayern
Hamann is convinced that Bayern will find a suitable coach, “because the position in Munich represents a huge opportunity for many coaches,” the 50-year-old said.
However, Hamann considers it unlikely that Tuchel will continue his tenure at Säbener Straße. “Bayern have clearly stated that he is not an option, and following Hoeneß’s comments, I can’t imagine Tuchel would be greatly interested in staying,” he clarified.
