The seemingly certain arrival of Kylian Mbappe at Real Madrid could be decisive in causing the club to set aside their desire to sign Alphonso Davies.
Carlo Ancelotti believes that Ferland Mendy might be a better fit as left-back in a team where the new player coming from Paris Saint-Germain operates as a left winger.
For several months now, media outlets covering Real Madrid have pointed to Canadian Alphonso Davies, the 23-year-old left-back, as a major target for the club.
He is appealing to Los Blancos due to his talent and experience, and also because his contract ends in 2025 and he is not inclined to renew it.
Although it has been assumed that Real Madrid would make their move this summer, a report from the newspaper Marca questions this potential offensive and explains that they are no longer so sure.
Firstly, because the full-back has experienced a noticeable dip in his performance and has lost his undisputed starter status to Raphaël Guerreiro, who has taken over the starting role in high-stakes matches.
The Mbappé Factor
Secondly, as the newspaper adds, Real Madrid’s coach, Carlo Ancelotti, believes that in a Madrid where Kylian Mbappe acts as a forward on the left wing, a full-back like Ferland Mendy fits much better.
“In this outline of what Madrid will look like with the Parisian, Mendy’s profile fits better than that of a full-back like Davies, who is more focused on attacking than defending,” according to Marca.
At Concha Espina, it is clear that Mendy and Davies cannot coexist, so if Ancelotti’s view prevails, the North American will say goodbye to the possibility of landing at Santiago Bernabéu this summer.
Conversely, if the club decides to bet on the native of Buduburam (Ghana), it will be the Frenchman who will be forced to pack his bags. This is a matter to keep an eye on.
