Arne Slot is almost certain to lead Liverpool’s squad next season, but possibly without two veterans. René van der Gijp believes that both Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah will leave.
According to Van der Gijp, Slot is taking a huge risk by succeeding Jürgen Klopp. He can only think of Pep Guardiola at Bayern Munich who successfully followed a legendary coach.
“Pep didn’t get crushed, but everyone else who followed a coach who was elevated to a Jesus-like status did get crushed,” the former footballer said on Vandaag Inside, according to the Dutch outlet Soccernews.
Johan Derksen disagrees with that view.
“Slot surpassed Dick Advocaat, right? He was the coach of Feyenoord, then Slot came and showed that things could be done better in a different way.”
Van der Gijp added, “True, but Klopp has been at Liverpool for nine years. He even has his own café, the Klopp café; he’s like Jesus there.”
“And everyone is leaving: Salah is leaving, Van Dijk is leaving, I’m one hundred percent sure of that,” says Van der Gijp. However, Derksen is enthusiastic about Slot as Liverpool’s manager. “I think he’ll be sensational there too.”
