The Mexican driver is currently in second place in the drivers’ championship.
The 2024 season has started ideally for Red Bull. Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez continue to dominate Formula 1, holding the top two spots in the drivers’ championship, and the team leads in the constructors’ title race.
However, the future of Perez at Red Bull is not yet secured. Christian Horner, the team’s principal, admitted that they are not planning to announce the Mexican’s renewal yet, who finished third in the last Chinese Grand Prix.
“Of course, he would like to make an announcement tomorrow, no doubt, but we, as a team, are not in any rush. We are in a fortunate position where many drivers would like to drive for the team, but we are happy with the pair we have,” Horner said, according to Speedcafe.
“We want to make sure that the level of consistency Checo has shown at the start of this season is maintained and, in due course, we will evaluate these options… there is no immediate rush to announce our lineup for 2025.”
He also dismissed the possibility of Lando Norris taking Checo’s place. There have been a lot of rumours about this, but Horner seems to have shut those down.
“Norris is under contract at least until 2026, so he’s not a short-term option, nor is Oscar Piastri, but both drivers are interesting to us for the future,” he acknowledged.
Horner did not rule out the possibility of either of the two drivers joining Red Bull in the future. They have both demonstrated great talent, and therefore it could become relevant for Red Bull to sign them once they are no longer under contract with McLaren.
