Tests conducted this Monday determine that the Dutch player has suffered a second-degree sprain.

Bad news for Barcelona, bad news for Frenkie de Jong. Medical tests conducted Monday on the Dutch player confirm that he suffers from a Grade II sprain in his right ankle, an injury that will keep him off the pitch for about five weeks.

Therefore, Frenkie will not play again for the Blaugrana this season.

This Sunday, just before halftime, the Dutchman twisted his right ankle in a clash with Valverde, who went to the ground and entered fully into the contest for the ball.

The Barca player quickly lay on the pitch, complaining about his ankle, the same one he injured last March.

He had also injured this area for the first time last autumn, though the diagnosis was different from that of last March, when he was sidelined for five weeks.

In the medical statement, Barcelona merely noted that De Jong suffers a sprain in his right ankle. “He is unavailable, and his recovery will determine his return,” the club added.

According to SPORT, Frenkie will definitely miss the matches against Valencia, Girona, Real Sociedad, Almería, and Rayo Vallecano. It is also likely that he will miss the league’s final game at Sevilla’s field.

If Barca has already secured the second spot, it seems that the midfielder will not return until next season.

However, the former Ajax player should be ready to play the two friendlies with his national team before the first match of the Euro.

On June 6 and 10, the Netherlands will face Canada and Iceland. Then, on the 16th of the same month, the continental tournament begins, for which Frenkie will be available.
