Engaged in the search for a replacement for Stefano Pioli, AC Milan has included Xavi Hernández on its list of candidates. Unless there is a major surprise, he will leave FC Barcelona at the end of the current season.
In just a few hours, AC Milan and Inter Milan will face off in a duel that will test whether the Rossoneri still have a slim chance of competing for the Scudetto. Although the task would still be extremely difficult, a victory would place them eleven points behind with 15 points left to play for.
Barring a miraculous comeback, this is likely to be the last derby in which Stefano Pioli leads the Milan squad. The club’s leaders are already considering using the end of the season to bid farewell to a coach who has not met the set objectives this year.
To fill his position, the Lombards have already compiled a list of candidates which includes the Italo-Brazilian Thiago Motta (Bologna), the Portuguese Paulo Fonseca (Lille), and the Basque Julen Lopetegui (currently without a team), as well as Xavi Hernández.
The 44-year-old from Egara has already announced he will leave FC Barcelona at the end of this season. Apparently, the club’s current advisor, Swedish Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who had the opportunity to work with him during his time in Catalonia, has suggested his candidacy, according to CalcioMercato.
For now, it is unknown if the man from Vallès would be open to joining the Serie A team. In fact, at Barça, his departure is not yet considered certain, although after consecutive defeats to PSG in the Champions League and Real Madrid in the league, his chances of staying at the club have decreased.
