US athletes strongly criticize the extremely revealing Nike outfits for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Nike has designed outfits for the 2024 Paris Olympics for the US participants. The female athletes, in particular, have complained about the extremely revealing sportswear proposed by Nike. The criticism mainly targets the thin, high-cut panties that the athletes are supposed to wear.
“Wait, my private area is exposed,” commented long jumper Tara Davis-Woodhall, who participated in the 2020 Olympics, on social media, as reported by Yahoo Sports.
“If the outfit was truly meant to enhance performance, men would wear it too.”
Queen Claye, a US hurdler who competed in the 2008 Olympics, also commented on the issue, suggesting that the athletes could be sponsored by a European hair removal center.
Lauren Fleshman, national champion in 2006 and 2010, also criticized the clothing. Athletes should be able to perform without constantly worrying about showing too much skin.
“If this outfit truly benefited physical performance, men would wear it too. This is not an elite sports kit for athletics. This is a costume born from patriarchal forces,” she wrote on her Instagram profile.
A spokesperson for the US track and field team stated in a comment to The Guardian that the design had been planned with the needs and wishes of the female athletes as a priority. Nike announced to Reuters that the team would have tailors available this year.
