The Sky Blues celebrate a resounding win against Luton Town. Newcastle defeats Tottenham 4-0.
Manchester City has taken the lead in the English Premier League title race. Under team manager Pep Guardiola, the team decisively beat relegation-threatened newcomers Luton Town 5-1, moving ahead of FC Arsenal and FC Liverpool to take the top spot.
The overwhelmingly dominant Citizens took an early lead. A quick start was made possible by an own goal from Daiki Hashioka (2nd minute), who unfortunately deflected Erling Haaland’s shot with his head.
In the second half, Mateo Kovacic (64th) added a spectacular volley, before Haaland (76th) increased the lead with a penalty. This was his 20th goal of the season.
Ross Barkley (81st) scored a consolation goal with the second shot on target for the Sky Blues, before Jeremy Doku (87th) restored the earlier margin six minutes later. Josko Gvardiol (90+3) put the final touch on the score.
Arsenal and Liverpool had the opportunity to overtake the unbeaten Citizens since early December at the top of the table on Sunday. But Liverpool and Arsenal ended up losing their respective matches. City is now in the lead in the title race.
This means that there is a good chance Guardiola can lead his troops to another triumph in the Premier League.
Although there is no doubt that the former Barcelona player is among the best coaches in the world, this achievement would only serve to further emphasize that fact.
However, it’s important to mention that the race is not over yet. Both City, Arsenal, and Liverpool still have a chance to win the Premier League title this season. The coming months will therefore be both crucial and exciting.
