Yesterday marked exactly one week since Jonas Vingegaard had a severe fall in the Tour of the Basque Country. The Danish cyclist suffered a broken collarbone, several broken ribs, and a bruised lung from the crash. Vingegaard’s parents are understandably worried about their son’s condition.
In an interview with the Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet, Claus Vingegaard reveals that he has still not been able to speak with his son. “It’s really hell for us,” he says. “A week after his fall, my wife and I still haven’t heard anything from Jonas. We just haven’t had the chance. Not with Jonas, nor with his wife or team. I don’t know how it’s possible, but I guess that’s just how it has to be?”
Claus Vingegaard is also unable to provide any details about the medical condition of the two-time Tour de France winner. “We really only know what we read in the media. It’s not that we don’t want to visit him in Spain, but at this moment, I think we shouldn’t. We only receive brief updates.”
Successful Surgery
Earlier this week, Visma-Lease a Bike reported that Vingegaard had successfully undergone surgery on his collarbone. He also had a procedure for his punctured lung. The Dane then returned to the Intensive Care Unit at the Txagorritxu Hospital in Vitoria, Basque Country, where he is being supported by his wife Trine Hansen.
There are questions about Vingegaard’s readiness for the Tour de France, which starts on June 29 in Florence. Merijn Zeeman, the sports director of Visma-Lease a Bike, has already indicated that Vingegaard will definitely miss the first high-altitude training camp for the Tour, starting on May 6.
