With a 16-point lead and six matchdays remaining, Bayer Leverkusen could clinch the Bundesliga title for the first time as early as next weekend if one of these scenarios occurs.
Bayer Leverkusen is on the verge of winning the championship for the first time in its club history. Following Bayer’s 1-0 victory at Union Berlin on Saturday and FC Bayern’s simultaneous loss to the newly promoted FC Heidenheim, the club could secure the title next weekend through their own efforts.
However, it’s also possible that Bayer could be confirmed as champions before their home game against Werder Bremen on Sunday. With a current 16-point lead and six matchdays left, the following scenarios arise:
According to Spiegel, Leverkusen will be confirmed as champions on matchday 29 if…
- FC Bayern (against FC Köln) and VfB Stuttgart (against Eintracht Frankfurt) both lose on Saturday.
- Bayer wins against Werder Bremen on Sunday
- Bayer draws against Werder and both Bayern and Stuttgart fail to win the day before.
The championship hasn’t been decided this early since 2018. “My plan was a bit later,” even Bayer coach Xabi Alonso admitted. At the same time, the Spaniard urged patience: “The situation is superb, but we don’t want to celebrate yet. We’ll wait a bit. We might celebrate something next Sunday. Nothing is over yet.”
“We must be aware that we can talk about the title today because we can really make history,” midfielder Granit Xhaka said on Saturday after the team’s 41st consecutive match without a loss.
Bayer Dreams of the Triple
Confidence is so high that the possibility of achieving a triple is openly discussed. “We had goals. One was to reach the DFB-Pokal final. Goal number one achieved. This weekend we can achieve goal number two. And then hopefully comes goal number three: To go as far as possible in the Europa League, and ideally to win something,” said Xhaka. “The sooner we become German champions, the more we can focus on the Europa League.”
In the Pokal final against FC Kaiserslautern, Bayer is the clear favorite. The championship title is almost assured, and in the Europa League quarter-finals, West Ham United is the underdog. “We are not unbeatable, but if we continue with the mentality, staying grounded, and doing our work daily as before, anything is possible,” said Xhaka. It seems one title is not enough for Leverkusen this season.
