Bayern Munich has slowly started looking for a successor to Manuel Neuer, who has a contract with the German club until 2025.
Manuel Neuer (38) is becoming aware that there is life outside football. Neuer (contract until 2025) is still irreplaceable. Yet, the goalkeeper casting has already begun in the background.
A logical candidate for the succession is Alexander Nübel (27), currently on loan to VfB Stuttgart. FC Bayern is in contact with the goalkeeper, Max Eberl (50) and Christoph Freund (46) have reached out to Nübel. The bosses of the record champions still trust him to succeed Neuer.
Nonetheless, it is clear to everyone: If Nübel were to make a blunder like he did on Sunday in VfB’s 3-3 draw against Heidenheim, letting the ball slip through his own legs while wearing the record champion’s jersey, there would be immediate discussions.
Nübel is supposed to extend his contract with Bayern for the long term, if possible, desired is a four- or five-year contract. The plan: Then he should be loaned out again to VfB Stuttgart for at least one year, where he can gain international experience and continue to mature. Recently, Newcastle and AS Roma showed interest in him.
Bayern is also looking abroad: At the top of the ranking are the national goalkeepers of Portugal, Diogo Costa (24/FC Porto, 45 million) and France’s Mike Maignan (28/AC Milan, 40 million). They would be statement transfers and have proven their class, but are very expensive.
Also on the list: Bart Verbruggen (21/Brighton). Holland’s national goalkeeper was already scouted, showing his potential in the international match against Germany (1:2). His market value is “only” 15 million euros, however, he still needs to consistently prove his class.
Already in the Bayern squad is Israel’s national goalkeeper Daniel Peretz (23). The management is pleased with his development and training performances, however, he is supposed to be loaned out in the summer to gain experience at the highest level.
