Canelo Alvarez believes the only positive aspect of the fight between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson is that it will be sponsored by the streaming giant, Netflix.
Mexican boxer Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is currently in the midst of preparing for his fight against fellow countryman Jaime Munguía, but this Saturday, he took a few minutes away from his training to share his thoughts on the match that will pit YouTuber Jake Paul against the former heavyweight world champion, Mike Tyson.
In an interview with YES Network, Canelo Alvarez made it clear that he believes the scheduled fight between Paul and Tyson is more of a spectacle than anything else, especially due to the difference between the two and the involvement of the streaming giant, Netflix, who will sponsor it.
“It’s more show than a real fight,” commented the reigning unified super middleweight world champion.
However, Canelo Alvarez mentioned that the most positive aspect is that a company like Netflix has shown interest in the duel between Paul and Tyson, but beyond that, he is not interested and will not watch it.
“I’m not interested in watching it at all, with Netflix involved, yes, that’s good, but not in those kinds of fights,” he added.
He also made it clear that regardless of what the fight between Paul and Tyson might represent for many, Canelo Alvarez believes it is targeted at a different audience than true boxing fans,
“Of course, it’s not good for the sport, but they can do what they want, I don’t have much to say about it. Everyone has an audience, this is a different audience. Boxing fans aren’t going to watch that, it’s for another audience,” he concluded.
The fight between Tyson, who is currently 57 years old and 30 years older than Jake Paul (27), will take place on July 20th at the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys stadium, the AT&T Stadium in Texas.
