Recent remarks made by Vinícius Jr., the Brazilian and Real Madrid sensation, captured global football interest this Monday.
The 23-year-old recently shared how racism from rival fans has impacted his mental health.
Vinícius addressed the media shortly before Brazil’s friendly game against Spain on Tuesday night, discussing the recent surge of racism in La Liga.
The conversation turned to the distressing racism Vinícius has faced in Spain, leading him to become visibly emotional during his response.
Overwhelmed, the talented winger revealed that the abuse had driven him to contemplate retiring from football entirely.
“I just want to play football. I’ve thought about quitting. I’m sorry. I just want to play football, do everything for my club and my family, never see black people suffering,” he said, according to Marca
“I’ve been watching this (racism) happen for a long time, and I feel sadder and sadder, I’m less and less willing to play. No one is supporting me.”
It is not the first time that the Real Madrid star has tried to create more focus around racism in Spanish football.
He has been the subject of racist chants and insults several times during matches in La Liga. Several times this has resulted in him getting into verbal fights with spectators while a match has been going on.
