Barcelona President Joan Laporta confirms that the Catalan club has terminated its contract with Nike due to the apparel company allegedly breaching several agreements.
A 26-year partnership appears to be nearing its end. Nike has been the kit sponsor for Barcelona since 1998, but now the Catalan club has terminated the agreement with the American company.
This was shared by Joan Laporta, the president of Barcelona, in an interview with Barca Studios.
“We informed Nike that we would be terminating the contract due to what we considered to be clear breaches of the agreement.
“They had 45 days to compensate us, but they failed to do so, and we notified them that the contract would be terminated,” Laporta stated.
Uncertain Future
The contract with Nike was supposed to run until 2026, but following the announcement that Barca has ended the partnership, it’s unclear what the future holds for the club’s apparel.
Laporta revealed that Nike has proposed a new and improved contract, which still falls short of Barcelona’s expectations.
“They attempted to enhance the contract, but it’s not sufficient, as we know the market offers more.
“We are negotiating with all options on the table, aiming for Barca to secure the best sponsorship deal in the world.
“We’re open to everything, but we cannot accept a contract that’s significantly below what the market offers,” the Barcelona chief explained.
Many anticipate that Puma might become Barcelona’s new kit sponsor.
