Tobi Amusan won two gold medals at the 13th African Games in Ghana.
Tobi Amusan, the world record holder in the 100m hurdles, showcased her status as Africa’s premier track and field athlete by securing two gold medals, boosting Team Nigeria’s medal tally at the 13th African Games in Ghana.
According to The Guardian, Amusan successfully defended her title in the 100m hurdles and went on to lead Nigeria’s 4x100m relay team to victory, finishing with a time of 43.05 seconds, comfortably ahead of Liberia and Ghana.
Nigeria also triumphed in the men’s 4x100m relay shortly thereafter, outpacing Ghana and Liberia. Amusan’s victory in the women’s 100m hurdles earlier marked a historic achievement, as she became the first African woman to win three gold medals at the African Games.
Despite a tense start that required a caution, once the race commenced, Amusan dominated to the finish line, winning with a time of 12.89 seconds, slightly slower than her Games record of 12.68 seconds set in Rabat 2019.
However, the spotlight also fell on Chidi Okezie in the men’s 400m. Determined to move beyond his history of bronze medals in African competitions, Okezie surpassed pre-race favorites Muzala Samukonga of Zambia and Tidiane Diouf of Senegal in the final stretch, clocking a personal best of 45.06 seconds – making it Nigeria’s fastest time in recent memory. Samukonga finished second with a time of 45.37 seconds.
On a less fortunate note, Nigeria’s Duben Nwachukwu had a disappointing performance, finishing last with a time of 47.13 seconds.
