The Suns have ensured that another highlight of Kevin Durant’s illustrious career is commemorated.
In a memorable game where the Phoenix Suns triumphed over the Philadelphia 76ers with a score of 115-102, Kevin Durant achieved a significant milestone.
Requiring only nine points to move ahead of Shaquille O’Neal for the eighth spot on the NBA’s all-time scoring list, Durant secured his ninth and tenth points through a midrange jump shot early in the third quarter, marking yet another achievement in his storied career as one of basketball’s all-time great small forwards.
The Suns took a moment to celebrate Durant’s accomplishment; during the subsequent break in play, the Suns’ stadium announcer invited the crowd at Footprint Center to stand and deliver a roaring round of applause for Durant.
The celebration was further highlighted by a special message from O’Neal himself, played in the arena, in which he lauded Durant for his ascent in the ranks of NBA history.
“Kevin Durant, first of all, I want to congratulate you for passing me to become eighth in the NBA’s all-time scoring list. Well-deserved. You know it doesn’t stop here. Let’s see if you can get to number one [on the all-time scoring list]. I’m happy for you, and congratulations brother,” O’Neal said, according to Clutchpoints.
Kevin Durant tallied 22 points in the Suns’ victory against the 76ers, elevating his total career points to 28,610. Throughout his NBA tenure, Durant has demonstrated exceptional skill with each team he’s been a part of, notably accruing over half of his total points while with the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Last season, Durant expressed his desire to be traded to the Suns, a wish that was fulfilled. To date, the 35-year-old small forward has accumulated 1,926 points across 70 games with the Suns.
