Andy Murray has expressed confidence that he still has ‘plenty left in the tank’ after securing a win at the Miami Open.
The athlete from Scotland battled against Wimbledon 2021 finalist Matteo Berrettini in the opening round on Wednesday, mounting a comeback to clinch a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory.
Currently ranked as the British number four and aged 36, he has alluded to the possibility of retiring this year, suggesting this might be his last participation in the Miami tournament.
Despite a suboptimal first set, he didn’t allow it to deter him from taking control of the match and securing a victory as Berrettini faced challenges with dizziness.
After his triumph, Murray left a message on a TV camera, a gesture reminiscent of Carlos Alcaraz’s at Indian Wells earlier in the month.
He humorously noted, “Life in the old dog yet!” complemented by a smiley face.
The victor of the Miami Open twice has recorded only four wins this year and has navigated through criticism.
In January, Murray openly criticized a BBC journalist’s post on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, which questioned when he should end his career.
The journalist, Kheredine Idessane, shared an article he authored, suggesting Murray’s continued play could tarnish his legacy.
Next, Murray is set to compete against Argentine Tomas Etcheverry, the same opponent who eliminated him from the Australian Open in January with a 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 loss.
