Ajax Star Chuba Akpom Reacts to Missing Nigeria’s Matches Against Ghana and Mali

AFC Ajax forward Chuba Akpom will be spending the upcoming international break in London after not receiving a call-up from Nigeria.

Having shifted his international allegiance from England to Nigeria, Akpom, who previously played for England’s youth teams up to the U21 level, has not featured for the Nigerian team since 2019.

Despite a successful stint at Middlesbrough last season, Akpom’s performance in the Netherlands has been less consistent. Nevertheless, he has contributed seven goals and an assist in 18 matches for Ajax in the Eredivisie.

Despite these contributions, he was overlooked for the Nigerian squad set to compete against Ghana and Mali in upcoming friendlies, according to Soccernet.ng.

As his teammates depart for international duty, Akpom plans to return to London, using the time to ponder Ajax’s challenges this season.

“I’m going back to London and spending time with my family because it’s been a difficult time for all of us,” Akpom said, according to Ajax Life.

“We need to calm down mentally and clear our heads so that we can end the season on a positive note.”

Over the weekend, Akpom emerged as a key player for Ajax, contributing a goal and an assist in their 2-2 tie with Sparta Rotterdam. Entering the game as a substitute, the Anglo-Nigerian forward expressed a preference for more regular playtime and the opportunity to score.

His path to joining the Nigerian national team is hampered by the abundance of forward talent at the Super Eagles’ disposal. Players like Victor Osimhen, Victor Boniface, Taiwo Awoniyi, Paul Onuachu, and Terem Moffi currently rank above Akpom in selection priority.
