Fernando Alonso has reignited rumors with a mysterious social media post. Many believe he is hinting at a switch to Mercedes.
Speculation about Fernando Alonso’s potential move to Mercedes was reignited after he shared a photo from the same Monaco café where his agent Flavio Briatore and Mercedes’ Toto Wolff were seen meeting.
The surprise news of Lewis Hamilton moving to Ferrari for the next F1 season has stirred the pot in the driver market, leaving Mercedes with a big gap to fill for the coming year.
A slew of drivers, including Carlos Sainz, Alex Albon, Esteban Ocon, and Aston Martin’s Alonso, have been rumored to fill Mercedes’ open slot.
Alonso’s recent Instagram post from Monaco’s Pasticceria Cova Montecarlo, following the Hamilton-Ferrari revelation, might have been a calculated move.
Shortly after Hamilton’s switch was disclosed, Alonso’s agent Briatore shared an image with Wolff at the café, a location Alonso visited after his stint at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.
The focus of Alonso’s photo, a cup bearing an image reminiscent of his 2005 World Championship win in Brazil, echoed the setting of Briatore and Wolff’s meeting.
While it might just be a coincidence, such hints are typical of Alonso’s strategic public relations.
Alonso remains a strong candidate to partner George Russell at Mercedes. However, the 42-year-old has recently mentioned needing to decide whether he wants to continue in Formula 1 after 2024 before committing to any team.
