Tobi Amusan, the world record holder in the 100m hurdles, is set to represent Team Nigeria in various track events at the 13th African Games currently underway in Ghana.

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) confirmed her participation in a recent announcement, outlining that Amusan will compete in not only her specialty, the 100m hurdles, but also in the 100m, 200m, and the 4x100m relay races.

This is reported by The Guardian.

Aiming to etch her name in the history books, Amusan is on the quest to become only the second Nigerian woman to defend a title at the African Games across two consecutive editions, following in the footsteps of shot put champion Vivian Chukwuemeka. Chukwuemeka triumphed in Johannesburg (1999), Abuja (2003), and Algeria (2007).

Having claimed the 100m hurdles title at her first appearance in 2015 and retaining it in 2019 with a new record time of 12.68 seconds, Amusan now targets a remarkable third consecutive title.

A feat unrivaled in the event’s history and only once achieved by a Nigerian athlete in the entirety of the Games’ track and field segment.

The women’s sprint and relay team will include athletes such as Blessing Ogundiran, Justina Eyakpobeyan, Abinusawa Moforehan, and Onyebuchi Chisom, with Faith Osamuyi and Stella Ayanleke joining Amusan in the 100m hurdles.

The long jump will see world silver medalist Ese Brume, alongside Ruth Usoro and Pristina Ochonogor.

The men’s sprint and relay lineup features Consider Ekanem, Itshekiri Usheoritse, Okon Israel, Seye Ogunlewe, Alaba Akintola, Adegoke Enoch, and Adekalu Fakorede, with competitions set to commence on March 18.
