NBA star and part-owner of Liverpool, LeBron James, believed Virgil van Dijk would be an excellent captain for the club and it looks like he was spot on.
LeBron became a partner with Liverpool’s managing group, Fenway Sports Group, in 2021. He recently released a new clothing line with Liverpool called ‘LFC x LeBron: Chapter 2’. The launch happened on Wednesday, and Van Dijk was there showing off the new outfits.
Liverpool shared a clip of Van Dijk listening to a pre-recorded message from LeBron, sent before the season started and just after Van Dijk was named the team’s new captain. LeBron cheered him on, taking over from Jordan Henderson, and said he believed Van Dijk would lead Liverpool to great successes.
“VVD, my guy, I hope you’re well. I just want to say a huge congratulations on taking the armband this season,” James said according to Mirror.
“I know you will lead this club on amazing things. Strive for greatness. You’ll Never Walk Alone.”
The Dutch star appeared to be very happy with the message as he replied: “The King, isn’t it? The King has spoken. Nice to have this on, let’s rock and roll.”
So far, Van Dijk is living up to those expectations. Wearing the captain’s armband, he’s been an outstanding leader and has played exceptionally well in Liverpool’s defense.
