An Arsenal fan faces assault charges after an incident in which former Manchester United captain Roy Keane was attacked.
Scott Law, 43, from Waltham Abbey in Essex, has been charged with assault and is due to appear at Highbury Magistrates’ Court on March 14, after being charged by post on February 13.
The incident took place at the Emirates Stadium on September 3 last year, after Arsenal secured a 3-1 victory over Manchester United.
According to several sources, Law confronted Roy Keane, who was present as a pundit for Sky Sports, after which Law allegedly broke his nose by headbutting Keane.
A video shared on social media shows how Micah Richards, another pundit for Sky Sports, intervenes to defuse an apparent confrontation.
This is reported by Daily Mail Online.
Sky Sports subsequently confirmed that Richards had intervened to prevent the situation. “We are aware that the police are investigating an alleged assault by a member of the public immediately before the video circulating on social media,” the broadcaster stated after the incident. The video shows how Micah Richards tries to defuse the situation.
The incident occurred shortly after Manchester United’s winger Alejandro Garnacho apparently secured the victory for the team in the 88th minute.
Keane and Richards, who covered the game along with former Arsenal player Theo Walcott, hurried back to the studio to see what had happened when Garnacho’s goal was eventually disallowed after a VAR check. Keane, who had a tumultuous relationship with Arsenal during his playing days, was eventually escorted down to the pitch, where he continued to broadcast.
