Lionel Messi is in talks with the Argentine Football Association about the possibility of representing Argentina at the Summer Olympics in Paris in 2024.
This was announced by Javier Mascherano, who is the manager of the American U23 team. He mentioned that he had spoken with Messi about the possibility of Messi participating in the Olympics as one of the three players on the Argentine team who may be over 23 years old.
Mascherano, who himself has a past as a player on the Argentine national team, shared details about his conversations with Messi in an interview with TyC Sports. “I spoke with Leo,” Mascherano said about the 36-year-old Messi. “He has just started the season with Inter Miami. There is still time before the games, especially since he also has to play in the Copa America.”
This would not be the first time Messi represents Argentina at the Olympics.
He was part of the team that won gold at the Summer Olympics in 2008 in Beijing but has not participated in any other Olympic Games since then.
Messi, who has won the Ballon d’Or eight times, has so far had an excellent start to the season with Inter Miami, where he has scored three goals and made one assist in the first three games.
After a successful period with Paris Saint-Germain and an impressive performance at the World Cup in 2022, Messi has, however, struggled with fatigue and injuries in his first season in MLS.
The Olympic football tournament for men and women will take place from July 24 to August 10 in France.
