The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is a Nigerian union made up of academic staff members, including professors, lecturers, and researchers, from public universities in Nigeria. It was founded in 1978 and is dedicated to protecting and promoting the welfare and interests of academic staff in Nigerian universities.

ASUU’s primary objectives are to advocate for better funding and management of Nigerian universities, promote academic freedom and excellence, and protect the rights and welfare of its members. The union negotiates with the Nigerian government and university management to improve working conditions, including salaries and benefits, and to ensure that universities have the necessary resources to provide quality education to students.

Over the years, ASUU has engaged in numerous strikes and protests to draw attention to the challenges facing Nigerian universities and to demand better working conditions for its members. The union has also been involved in advocacy work related to education policy, research and development, and other issues affecting the academic community in Nigeria.
